Will There be an iCar?

I've heard rumors about Apple potentially creating its own car for years. You might have heard of these rumors, too! Is this rumor true? I don't know. But you may be asking yourself why a tech company would ever want to enter the automotive industry at all?

See, cars are increasingly becoming a tech play. Every day, you hear of new car tech - electric vehicles, self-driving, electronic dashboards, etc. As these mechanical beasts become increasingly tech-based, you must wonder who will build cars in the future? There are three significant possibilities:

  1. Existing car companies build tech for vehicles.

  2. Tech companies start building cars that harbor their tech.

  3. Existing car companies partner with tech companies to build cars.

Many tech companies are hoping to hop on to that second possibility: tech companies building cars. Recently, Xiaomi and Huawei, smartphone manufacturers from China, have launched their first cars. Dyson (yes, the vacuum cleaner company) tried launching their own car but couldn't create a commercially viable one. Sony ran into the same commercial viability problem. On the other hand, Google seems to be making a play for the third possibility and is mostly building out tech that can fit with any car (like how Android can work with any phone manufacturer).

For now, Apple is in the car space with Apple CarPlay. But with how the space is evolving, Apple should be moving swifter into the automobile space. Let's see what happens next!

Bonus: Assuming Apple truly has been trying to publicly launch a car for a few years now, why might they not have been able to launch a car? A significant possibility may be the challenge of setting up automobile manufacturing. It is super expensive to manufacture cars - even for Apple. The best way forward might be for Apple to partner with a prominent automotive brand to help manufacture their vehicles. But if a large car manufacturer partnered with Apple, what does it mean for their brand? Are they competing with themselves?
